ORGANIC GARDEN FOR COUVA CHILDREN’S HOME THROUGH EPIC PARTNERSHIP

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26 2018:  PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – The Couva Children’s Home and Crisis Nursery now has its own organic garden, thanks to the Digicel Foundation.

The development of the organic garden was achieved through the partnership with the Digicel Foundation under its EPIC (Extraordinary Projects Impacting Communities) Programme.  The Home anticipates that the garden would reduce both their bio-degradable and non-bio-degradable waste output.

After receiving the sum of US $5,000 from the Foundation, grow boxes, seedlings and aggregate material, and all other required materials were purchased to create the garden.

The aim of the project is multi-fold, which includes environmental preservation through food practices that strive to recycle resource, promote ecological balance and conserve biodiversity.

The wish of the management of the Home is to reduce its external food source dependency, by creating a viable option for income generation, with the long-term outcome of developing the vocational skills of the children through the success of the organic garden.

Paula Lovelace-Edwards, Manager at the Home further explained that the harvests from the garden will be shared with all the children at the Home. She was pleased with the success of the garden and the yield of vegetables reaped thus far. Lovelace-Edwards thanked the Digicel Foundation for their support and assistance in turning this idea into a reality and is eagerly awaiting the realisation of the benefits of the garden for the children at the Home.
