Launch of Reconstruction Work for the Institution Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours in Port-de-Paix, the 197th School Financed by the Digicel Foundation
Port-de-Paix, October 16, 2024: The Digicel Foundation is immensely proud to announce the launch of reconstruction work for the Institution Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours in Port-de-Paix. This ambitious project, marking the 197th school financed by the Foundation in Haiti, stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to education.
Institution Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours, a true pillar of education in Haiti, is about to celebrate its 150th anniversary. It is one of the oldest schools in the country and the very first founded by the Daughters of Wisdom in Haiti. Located in the heart of the city, near the cathedral, this school is a renowned institution in the Northwest and has contributed to the education of many generations of young Haitians.
However, despite the school's reputation and success, its public section is in need of significant renovations. The Digicel Foundation aims not only to provide the school with a new building but also to double its capacity. The number of classrooms will increase from 6 to 12, with each classroom covering 50 square meters and able to accommodate 50 students.
The construction site, which was launched on October 16, 2024, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Daughters of Wisdom Congregation, will be fully financed and supervised by the Digicel Foundation. If conditions permit, the project is expected to be completed within 10 consecutive months. Despite the difficult circumstances the country is facing, the Foundation remains firmly committed to its goal: to support and strengthen the Haitian education system, an essential lever for the future of coming generations.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to take on new challenges each year in school construction. Simultaneously, the Digicel Foundation is leading two other similar projects: Collège Jean XXIII – Annexe at Calvaire Ste Thérèse in Cap-Haïtien, and Sant Edikasyon ak Reyabilitasyon Kay Christine in Obléon, carried out in partnership with Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs. The Foundation also recently celebrated the inauguration of Collège Antoine Adrien in Furcy, reaffirming its continuous commitment to building modern and resilient school infrastructures.
With nearly 200 schools built, the Digicel Foundation supports school communities daily to ensure quality education for more than 60,000 students at all levels. This includes not only well-suited buildings but also teacher training and community involvement in school management. This new construction is another step toward a developed Haiti, driven by the engagement of well-educated citizens.
