The Digicel Foundation Celebrates 12 Years

TUESDAY 23 JULY, 2024: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – On 25 July 2024, the Digicel Trinidad and Tobago Foundation celebrates its 12th anniversary. Their numbers tell the story of a longstanding commitment to the social development of Trinidad and Tobago, investing over TT$51 million in 604 transformative projects and positively impacting 253,726 people to date.

On marking this anniversary, the Digicel Foundation’s CEO Penny Gomez shared, “It never fails to escape us that we are in the enviable, and super grateful position, for 12 years and counting, to make differences big and small in communities that feel overlooked and unheard.”

Established in 2012, The Digicel Foundation aims to partner with public, private and the non-profit sectors to implement programmes that transform communities, encourage digital citizenship and improve opportunities for persons with disabilities. In the last year alone, the Digicel Foundation took on over TT$1 million in partnerships to deepen the impact of the Foundation’s community projects.

“In all three areas of our investment: special needs; community development, and digitalisation, the biggest compliment our beneficiaries and partners pay to us, is just taking advantage of the improved infrastructure, utilizing the equipment or participating in the programmes, so that in turn they make their communities the kind of places that they wish to have wholesome lives,” shared Gomez.

Several of the Foundation’s flagship initiatives have had a profound impact on communities over the years. These include Preparing You – a disaster preparedness and emergency evacuation plan for persons with disabilities; EPIC – Extraordinary Projects Impacting Communities, a grant initiative aimed at empowering community based organisations to develop and transform indoor and outdoor spaces; and Girls Power Tech (GPT) – an event to inspire young girls and women to consider careers in ICT.

All of this significant work is powered by a small operational team, which reports to a Board of Directors, led by Chairperson Desha Clifford. The public is invited to read more about the work of the Digicel Foundation in its the Annual Report 2023-2024, available on its website at www.digicelfoundation.org/tt/en/reports/2023-2024-annual-report
